  • Young Hollywood is White and Thin?

Ask Vanity Fair to describe “Young Hollywood” and they would probably give you two words, “white” and “thin”. The folks over at Jezebel certainly agree.

They write: “Amanda Seyfried, Anna Kendrick, Kristen Stewart, Carey Mulligan, Abbie Cornish, Rebecca Hall, Emma Stone, Mia Wasikowska, Evan Rachel Wood: There’s not a single woman of color on the cover of Vanity Fair’s “Young Hollywood” issue. Two of the ladies — Kristen Stewart and Amanda Seyfried — were already on the August 2008 “Hollywood’s New Wave.” issue. There were two women of color — Zoe Saldana, America Ferrara — on the cover of 2008’s “Hollywood Issue,” but apparently the next decade is not about diversity.”

It’s amazing with this year’s Academy Award buzz around Gabourey “Gabby” Sidibe (Precious) and Zoe Saldana (Avatar) Vanity Affair didn’t include them. America Ferrara, Zoe Saldana and Gabourney Sidibe are certainly relevant. The saddest fact is that we only have three young women to reference. Where are the people of color in HOLLYWOOD? Where is the young Asian actress? Where is the young Indian actress? Where are they?

This year’s Academy Awards’ ceremony will be the 82nd Academy Awards. The fourth where a woman is nominated for Best Director. The previous three women nominated were the Best Director Oscar were Lina Wertmeuller for Seven Beauties in 1976, Jane Campion for The Piano in 1993, and Sofia Coppola in 2003 for Lost in Translation. (Two of these movies are on my top favorite list.) Then we shaking our head at the fact that Lee Daniels is only the second African American nominated for an Oscar and only the first nominated for a Director’s Guild Award. Times need to change and we need to reflect the reality of the world. There is not only one type of COLOR. We are a world of COLOR and STORIES and they need to be equally represented.
