A List: the glaad awards 2010

Romeo Redwine goes behind the scenes of the 2010, glaad awards. Interviewing the who’s who of gay entertainment and the allies that keep us visible and fighting.
Looking back at last year’s glaad Awards to now, there was undoubtedly a vast improvement. Last year’s show was great but glaad Awards 2010 blew everyone out of the water with star power and enough musical numbers to think you were on Broadway. Gay Icon, Alan Cumming performed a medley of current songs with a sarcastic gay twist, the Pride Chorus gave us a “Glee Moment” and the cast of Hair ( perhaps the most diverse cast I have ever seen) belted out their signature song, “Let the Sunshine in” coming into the audience to connect. The celebrity presenters were on point which means the writer’s of the show were on point. Congrats writers!
Joy Behar and Cynthia Nixon gave moving speeches and it was a GREAT night had by all. Amazing networking and an even better dance party.
Everyone could agree that the highlight of the evening was Will Phillips a 10 year old boy beyond his years who delivered a moving speech calling on President Obama to get to work. Go Will! Happy glaad awards!

An Evening with Glee’s Jane Lynch

If you are in New York, you are well aware of the angst of depending on the train to get you anyplace on time. The MTA(Metropolitan Transit Authority) really
stands for Make Alternative Plans. After sitting in the tunnel waiting, I thought I had clearly missed my opportunity to meet Jane Lynch.
Luckily, I arrived at The Center with moments to spare. The room was dim but I spotted her blond locks from a distance. A crowd of adoring fans
surrounded her awaiting to meet her glance for a moment before they swooped in. In the crowd, people stood quoting her and drinking wine.
I pushed my way through in anticipation.
Part One
My camera had died the day before so the only thing that remained was my SD (Standard Definition) mini dv camera. This was going to be a disaster.
The room was dim but an excited man in line broke the ice by asking me about my favorite Jane Lynch movie. He clearly saw the anxiety on my face.
I was on a mission. I didn’t want to talk about Jane’s’ films at a time where I was trying to work up the courage to ask her to send a hello to the fans at
The Rainbow Collective.
I was at the front and suddenly I started speaking coherently. It was a rather magical experience. Sue Slyvester was speaking to me and she wasn’t barking
she was attentive, gracious and warm. She even agreed to give a shout out. Yes! With a little color adjustment, we would have our greeting.
Remember my chatty friend? He suggested that he record it. Sadly, he took a photo instead and I got nothing. Well, not really.
I got to meet Jane Lynch and sit in the front row for a hilarious conversation. So in pure SD, here she is. Jane Lynch.
Please don’t miss any part of it. She talks about her roles in Glee, 40 year old virgin, Best of Show and Julia and Julia.
She does it all in perfect Jane Lynch comedic timing.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
INTRODUCING A TRIUMPHANT MEMOIR FROM ICONIC PERFORMANCE ARTIST STACEYANN CHIN THE OTHER SIDE OF PARADISE
By Staceyann Chin“A deeply personal, beautifully written memoir that takes us down a young woman’s road to discovery with all its struggles and heartbreak and ultimate joy. The Other Side of Paradise is a salve and a guidebook for all of our hearts.”
—Tim Robbins“Set in a Jamaica far from the tourist brochures, The Other Side of Paradise is Chin’s rich and nuanced story of family and abandonment, love and brutality, and a child’s struggle to survive and find a home that will accept her. This is A Portrait of the Artist written for our age. I love this book—and I am completely hamstrung by the feelings it evokes.”
—Walter Mosley“Staceyann’s courage, sensitivity and bravery are exposed on these vulnerable pages. Captured is the fire, passion and light I experience when she performs. Liberating, beautiful and life-affirming, The Other Side of Paradise is simply incredible.”
—Russell Simmons, author of Do You!“ shows me a culture I knew far too little about – the everyday life of young people in Jamaica and the threat of violence looming over anyone who might be too independent or queer or outrageous. How wonderful that this outrageous, talented, determined woman has given us her story.”
—Dorothy Allison, author of Bastard Out of Carolina and CavedwellerTo say that celebrated poet, performer and political activist Staceyann Chin is a force to be reckoned with would be putting it mildly. An opinionated figure, she is beloved the world over and recognized perhaps most famously for her appearance on both Broadway and HBO for Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam. Her work has been featured in the New York Times Magazine, the Washington Post, Jane and on 60 Minutes. She was also a guest on Oprah to discuss homosexuality in other cultures.
THE OTHER SIDE OF PARADISE (Scribner; April 14, 2009) is Staceyann Chin’s long awaited chance to tell her story in writing. Born in Jamaica on Christmas day, 1972, Chin’s arrival into the world was unexpected, as nobody even knew her mother was pregnant to begin with. In the absence of a mother or father to look after her, Chin’s grandmother becomes her and her brother, Delano’s, primary caretaker and biggest advocate.
Despite having their fair share of difficult times, this makeshift but loving family struggled together and Chin felt safe with her grandmother and brother at her side. But when the family’s financial needs forced them to move into a shared household, Chin learned the hard way to repress her vivacious personality in order to blend with her environment. Eventually, events conspired to permanently separate the three. The result is a tale of loss and family, or change and survival.
Later, as Chin came of age in a succession of homes—some dysfunctional, some welcoming and some merely adequate, she developed an unbreakable sense of self. Having always been a lively and spirited child, Chin grew into a bright, headstrong young woman, clearly on the verge of carving out a bigger existence for herself. While her life has had many twists and turns, including a confrontation with the man she believes to be her father and her dangerous coming out in college, she has remained courageous in the face of adversity. Told with grace, humor and courage, THE OTHER SIDE OF PARADISE is an unforgettable story of triumph against the odds.
About the Author
Staceyann Chin is a fulltime artist. A resident of New York City and a Jamaican National, she has been an “out poet and political activist” since 1998. From the rousing cheers of the Nuyorican Poets’ Cafe to one woman shows Off Broadway to poetry workshops in Denmark and London to co writer and performer in the Tony nominated, Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam on Broadway, Chin credits the long list of “things she has done” to her grandmother’s hard working history and the pain of her mother’s absence
