    One reviewer says,

5.0 out of 5 stars An incredible coming of age story., April 12, 2010

This book is a unique piece of modern literature. Weaving the experiences of a young girl in her quest to understand her identity in three distinct worlds, Powder Necklace takes you on a beautiful journey. Nana Brew-Hammond’s voice is clever, lyrical and humorous. I was so engrossed in Lila’s world, I read the whole book in two days, and wanted more. This is a must read!

  • Doze Green: Artist

    doze green

Doze Green was born and raised in the upper west side of Manhattan, New York City and was one of the pioneers of the Hip-Hop culture. He first started writing graffiti in his neighborhood in 1974, and started painting subway trains in 1976. The following year he joined the Rock Steady Crew. The Rock Steady Crew were pioneers of a new style of dance known as breakdancing or B-Boying. The crew first started dancing at art exhibitions and galleries of Soho and the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

During this time Doze Green was also attending the High School of Art and Design, where some of the most talented and well-respected graffiti artists came from. Artists such as Lady Pink, Daze, Ernie Valdez, Seen TC5, , , Mr. Wiggles, Mare 139, and numerous others. In 1982 Doze Green showed his artwork in a well-known group show at the Fun Gallery. At this same time after appearances in major movies such as Flashdance, Style Wars, and Wildstyle, the Rock Steady Crew was launched into action and the limelight.

From B-boy to graffiti legend, Doze Green has gone to tagging the hallways of South Bronx projects to designing for clothing lines like Kikwear and Ecko. In the process, he’s become a proponent of the avant-garde “fusionistic” art movement. Best known for his characters, Doze Green has begun to concentrate on canvases that blend wildstyle techniques with metaphysical concepts. Doze Green is also known for his live painting performances. Doze Green’s work is in many public and private collections throughout the United States, Japan, Europe, and Australia. His works have been published in BlackBook, Anthem, Juxtapoz, Tokion, and Vibe and reviewed on CNN.

  • New Music:NDambi Part 1 The Music, The Album

    NDAMB

The streets were busy with rush hour traffic as people spilled from their offices heading home but upstairs on Broadway in a chic New York boutique hotel, N’dambi was belting out songs for the press. I walked in just in time for the last song,”Can’t Hardly Wait.”? I was simply blown away. One can count those who can still sing in the business. Kandi (Real Housewives of Atlanta) says that you can make anyone sounds good. Luckily, N’dambi doesn’t need any assistance.

Her bold reddish bronze fro demands attention and her bright eyes relay the passion she feels for each note she sings. She is a tall shapely woman and her sweet nature is clearly seen as she reaches out for a firm but soft handshake. N’dambi is a humble musician. It is clear that she loves what she does. She has no problem singing her single acapella with Cornelius accompanying her on guitar. She grooves to the melody and performs what seems to be an extended version. She finishes and we all applaud. If she sounds this good live, I can only imagine what she will sound like with a full band. On October 13th, at SOB’s N’Dambi will bring us Pink Elephant live. It’s an event I already have in my calendar.

    The album

With a silky velvety sound and a funky groove, she delivers beautifully on each track. Her new album, Pink Elephant, debuting on October 6th, she brings a fresh new outlook. Coupled with storytelling and real honesty, the album gives everyone someone to connect with.
If you are in love, you are possibly singing, “The One”. (”You are my one.”)If you were in love, you are possibly singing, “Ooo Baby” reminiscing about better days. (”Hello baby, you were on my mind.”) If you are feeling in a great mood and want to take “good music back”, you are jamming to “The World is a Beat.”(”They romance me with a trance now people I don’t know don’t dance.”)

N’dambi’s key track, “Can’t Hardly Wait” is ferocious as a person fed up with their relationship talks about the anticipation of leaving a bad relationship for a new life. N’dambi boldly says, “I can’t wait til I get over you. Can’t wait…to stop f*ckin with you.” She is not afraid to say what she thinks and feels. It’s a great album for a feel ground house party. House Party anyone?

If you are just hearing on N’Dambi, you have a lot to catch up on.
